Programmes

Laboratories and museums

Multi-purpose laboratories serve histology, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, pathology and community medicine. The college holds anatomy, pathology and forensic medicine museums and a dissection hall, with a curator responsible for the pathology museum. The basic science laboratories and museums are shared with the dental college.

The laboratories hold binocular microscopes, a multi-head teaching microscope with a slide projection system, an automatic tissue processor, an embedding station, a paraffin embedding bath, a microtome with a knife sharpener, incubators, water baths, a water still, and refrigeration down to minus 30 °C. The community medicine laboratory runs the software used for research methods teaching — SPSS, Microsoft Excel, Epi Info, the WHO sample size calculator and a reference manager.

Teaching

Active learning is the educational strategy of the college. Lectures are interactive, small-group discussion is used as a learning strategy, and self-directed learning is supported by online lectures and video tutorials. Mannequins, models, simulators and simulated patients are used in teaching, pre-clinical subjects are taught with clinical relevance, and community visits are arranged.

The curricular outcomes are developed in alignment with the mission of the institution and with the involvement of faculty and students, and they address knowledge, skills and professional behaviour. A curricular map describes the content, extent and sequence of courses. Clinical rotations are scheduled for each clinical subject, and students spend planned time with patients. A curricular committee, with representation from the basic sciences, the clinical sciences and community medicine, plans, implements and evaluates the curriculum under documented terms of reference.

Research

The research cell has a named head and is overseen by a Research Advisory Board drawn from the basic sciences, medical education and the clinical sciences. A research ethics committee addresses the ethical questions a project raises, and a technical review committee assesses proposals on submission, with feedback returned to the researcher. The college maintains a data repository and a publishing policy, provides plagiarism-checking software and internet access, runs a yearly schedule of research development workshops, and holds collaborations with other institutions, including internationally.

Safety

A documented fire safety and evacuation plan names the person responsible for oversight and carries a training schedule. A trained response team is in place, mock evacuation drills are held, and a designated assembly area is known to staff and students. Extinguishers are placed in every department, evacuation maps are displayed on each floor, exits are unobstructed and marked with illuminated signs, and stairs and washrooms carry slip-resistant strips and grab bars, with ramps provided.

A documented waste management plan segregates infectious waste into colour-coded bags for incineration. Chemicals are labelled by hazard and stored at the correct temperature, and a spill kit and safety data sheets are held. Drinking water is tested quarterly and an alternate power supply covers the institution.
