Kishwar Fazal Teaching Hospital

Arrival and outpatients
The hospital has a docking bay for ambulances, a drop zone for patients who cannot walk, and a wheelchair and trolley bay at both. Parking is provided on the site.
The outpatient department has separate rooms for the different specialties and designated teaching areas in both outpatient and inpatient departments. Its rooms are equipped for examination, with stretchers, trolleys, wheelchairs and suction to hand.
Emergency and critical care
The emergency department is open at all hours and is directly accessible to patients. A triage process sets the order in which patients are seen, and the department sets and measures an upper limit on how long a patient stays in it.
Resuscitation facilities include a crash cart with a defibrillator and a cubicle with central oxygen, suction and monitoring. The department has its own procedure room, a minor operating theatre and a pharmacy, and its physicians hold current advanced life support certification. Medical, surgical, coronary, paediatric and neonatal intensive care are provided.
Operating theatres and sterilisation
The operating theatres are fully equipped, with monitoring in each theatre, resuscitation facilities, monopolar and bipolar diathermy, suction, an image intensifier, and a recovery area with central oxygen, suction and monitoring.
The central sterilisation department has separate instrument and linen washing areas, a washer disinfector, a steam autoclave of 500 L capacity reaching 134 °C, a low-temperature steriliser, a sealant machine, and a storage and distribution counter. Dirty linen and instruments are collected by a separate path from the clean one.
Radiology
The hospital holds a current registration with the Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority. The department runs X-ray at 500 mA with standing and horizontal bucky, portable X-ray at 100 mA for the wards, fluoroscopy with an image intensifier, ultrasound with colour Doppler and biopsy probes, mammography, a 64-slice CT scanner, MRI, a DEXA scanner, and OPG with cephalometry. Radiation protection is provided by lead aprons, lead shields and partitions, thermoluminescent dosimeters, and a film badge for each member of staff.
Laboratory and blood bank
The diagnostic laboratory serves the wards around the clock and covers haematology, chemical pathology, histopathology and microbiology. It runs automated chemistry, immunoassay, electrolyte and blood gas analysers, an automated differential counter, microscopes and staining facilities, with ELISA, protein electrophoresis and immunofluorescence.
The blood bank holds a serofuge, an agglutination viewer, a blood bank refrigerator, a platelet incubator, and a minus 30 °C storage freezer.
Infection control
A documented infection control programme runs across the hospital. Hepatitis B vaccination is mandatory for health care workers and students, there is a needle-stick injury policy, and sharps containers are replaced before they overfill.
Hand hygiene and isolation precaution signs are displayed where contact, droplet and airborne precautions apply, and hand soap, alcohol rubs at the point of care, gloves and gowns are provided. Eye wash stations are placed in the operating suite and the emergency department. Patients with pulmonary tuberculosis are nursed in a separate single room with maintained ventilation, and patients carrying multi-drug-resistant organisms are placed on contact precautions.
Governance
A structured hierarchy is set out in an organogram, and policies made by the hospital leadership are disseminated through a defined process. Neither clinical work nor the cost of materials used in training is charged to students, and graduates of the affiliated college are offered a paid house job in the hospital.
